In upstate Buffalo, New York Colin Kaepernick will walk into the locker room and put on his pads, and lead the San Francisco 49ers to charge against the Buffalo Bills. Kaepernick was named the teams starter early this week, in place of Blaine Gabbert.
Kaepernick is a quarterback and everyone quarterback believes they belong in the starting line-up. Which is good for Kaepernick because that is where he belongs. Kaepernick lead the 49ers to the Superbowl and came close to wining it. So he knows that he belongs on the big stage playing football.
He shouldn’t be doing anything else, especially negotiating contracts if his latest contract is anything to go by.
X-A-M Sports represents Kaepernick and they have done a piss poor job in doing so. Kaepernick originally signed a $126 million deal that had only $13 million in guaranteed money. The contract was made worse because the team had the choice to renew it year to year.
Kaepernicks deal was so bad that it would cost him $125,000 for every game he missed. Kaepernick has not started a football game in almost a year.
On the bright side the deal also featured a injury clause after this season. Meaning if he got hurt, no only would he get $14 million in salary but he would receive around $20 million from the organization. Until Tuesday.
Kaepernick’s restructure waives that policy and in return Kaepernick has a player option for next year.
Now I recognize that Kaepernick wanted to play and he may have felt he owed that organization something. During the protest of the national anthem that Kaepernick started and has since became a nationwide phenomenon, the organization stood by him. Kaepernick has been kneeling during the national anthem in protest to the police shootings of unarmed black men. The 49ers even gave a charitable donation to help race relations in the nearby area.
So maybe Kaepernick felt he needed to give something in return. However, Kaepernick should never give back the money.
For one, it set a bad precedent for other players who have deals that their respective teams want to get out of.
Also its horrible for him because now if he get hurt, which he is likely to do because he likes to run while playing quarterback, he gets nothing. Kaepernick should have just shut up and took the check.
I can’t believe an agent would allow their client to sign two ridiculous contracts and Kaepernick is even dumber for signing it.
At least for Kaepernick he gets to go where he belongs, on the field leading his team. Just with a lighter wallet.
